The distributive principle is a handy tool for reorganizing. As you gaze at the last example, you may notice one interesting transformation that occurred when we used it.

a(b+c)

is a multiplication problem, while

ab + ac

is an addition problem. Using the distributive principle we can translate a multiplication problem into an addition problem, and vice versa. Changing addition problems into multiplication problems is called “factoring.” If we see something like this:

a( b + e) + ab + ae = ???
